“Kiera” by Kate Willis

Kiera is looking forward to her eighteenth birthday. The official end of school, a party with her best friend, and chocolate cake. A sudden military draft, no possible exemptions, had never crossed her mind. Kiera is terrified! Getting drafted would mean leaving her family, her little friend Jade—life as she knows it. A surprising offer from Brennan Stewart just might be the answer to her prayers, but an even worse trial leaves her with one question…If God truly loves her, why did this tragedy happen?

Author: Kate Willis
Rating: ★★★★★ (4.5 stars)

Bible Translation Used: NKJV

Controversial: Talks about abortion (from a pro-life POV) and embryo adoption and storage. Characters play cards. Sparrows by Jason Gray is mentioned. Says a character muttered an expletive.  Married women wore head coverings at church. Does talk about someone’s death. Talks about one character’s abusive childhood.

Romance: This book had more than I normally prefer, but it between husband and wife (kissing, hugging) and is not in detail (it’s at the end of the book too). A wedding takes place.

Age: at least 14+. It talks about hard subjects in places and is somewhat sad.

I loved this book!!!! *squeals with excitement*

This book is under the labels of dystopian and romance, which made me nervous upon reading it (I don’t like books with romance and dystopian is not usually my thing). The romance was light (more than I like though), but if you like romance, you probably wouldn’t think there was any romance in it (Like I said above, it’s between husband and wife). As for dystopian, I think it’s more on the futuristic side (self-driving cars, pastor refusing to perform a perverted wedding and because of that, getting arrested, etc.) than the dystopian.

This book is enthralling! My sister had basically told me the first half of the story, and I was so interested I read it myself. It was so sad to see the church falling apart and people thinking Christians were hypocrites. It was nice to see how family stuck together. I’d tell you more but…..I……better….stop……..before…….I……tell…………the…..whole……book……..

***SPOILER ALERT! Highlight to view: Kiera marries Brennan out of convenience. ***END OF SPOILER!!! I nearly cried during this book (super rare) and I enjoyed it so much I went back and re-read my favorite parts (I only re-read books I love)! Jade is also the cutest……. This book is now a new favorite…

Note: There is a short story prequel, The Least of These. I read it after Kiera, but it can be read either way.
